How to Soften Your Beard with Coconut Oil

Dealing with a rough, scratchy beard is incredibly frustrating. You may have tried expensive creams and lotions to soften your facial hair, only to be frustrated by the lackluster results. But did you know that something as simple as a jar of coconut oil can do the trick better than any of those expensive options?

Coconut oil has long been considered a superfood, but it’s also widely available in tons of popular hair and skincare products on the market today. This is because coconut oil boasts a huge range of benefits, from reducing inflammation to anti-aging properties, and is cheap and accessible.

What is Coconut Oil?

Coconut oil is harvested from – you guessed it – coconuts. It is a type of vegetable oil that's extracted from the meat of coconuts. Coconut oil is one of the most popular superfoods on the planet. It has a saturated fat content of about 90%, and thanks to those great fatty acids, it can help lower cholesterol, moisturize dry skin, and soften even the roughest of beards. Plus, it tastes great and can be used in a variety of recipes.

Can Coconut Oil Benefit Your Beard?

Coconut oil can soften your beard hair while protecting the outer layers. This protection can help decrease split ends, stimulate hair growth, and nourish the skin beneath your beard.

While using coconut oil on your beard, your face will also reap its many benefits. Its antimicrobial properties promote healing of irritated, inflamed skin, and softer facial skin can help ensure your beard grows in evenly.

Encourages longer and fuller growth

Coconut oil has been shown to stimulate new hair growth. Once applied, it’s absorbed by the skin and hair follicles instead of sitting on top of the outer layers like most other oils due. This is due to its molecular structure and low weight and can make your beard look fuller, thicker, and healthier even after you’ve washed it out.

Helps fight beard dandruff

Beard dandruff is a very common issue for men, but thankfully, coconut oil is one of the most effective ways to treat it. Coconut oil helps reduce the build-up of dead skin cells by keeping moisture locked into your skin.

Adds moisture

If you want a softer beard, proper hydration is key. Coconut oil deep conditions your facial hair by moisturizing each strand from the inside out. By preventing the loss of your beard’s internal moisture, your hair will be left looking healthy and feeling softer.

Repairs damage

Damage to the follicles of your facial hair is one of the most common reasons why men encounter dry, rough beard growth. This damage can occur in any number of ways, from heavy wind, sun exposure, environmental pollution, and even your diet. Coconut oil can be used as a protective barrier for your hair any time you have to encounter harsh environmental factors.

What type of coconut oil is best for your beard?

There are two types of coconut oil you’ll encounter when shopping:

  • Refined Coconut Oil, which is made from dried coconut meat and is bleached and treated to reduce bacteria. This type of oil will also typically include chemicals or partially hydrogenated fats.
  • Pure or Virgin Coconut Oil, which is made from fresh coconut meat and is free of bleaching, chemicals, and additives.

A cold-pressed virgin coconut oil is the best option for treating your beard. This type of coconut oil may cost a little bit more, but the nutritional benefits are much greater than the refined options.

How do you apply coconut oil?

For the best results, coconut oil should be applied evenly throughout your beard. At room temperature, pure coconut oil will be in a solid form, so you’ll need to warm it up before applying it to your facial hair. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Clean and dry your beard. As with any beard moisturizer, coconut oil works best when applied to a clean face and facial hair.
  2. Start by rubbing a small amount – around a teaspoon’s worth – of coconut oil in your palms. This will help the oil melt and make it easier to apply evenly.
  3. Massage the coconut oil directly onto your face, using your fingers to run it through your beard from the roots to the tips.
  4. Pay extra attention to the bottom of your beard and work any leftover oil into the ends for added effectiveness.

Be sure to store your coconut oil at room temperature. You may notice that the oil will melt during warmer months, but don’t toss it out. Melting doesn’t affect coconut oil’s potency, so you can keep using it for as long as the jar says it’s good for.
